In 2009 I earned my Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) designation through the Professional Photographic Certification Commission. Fewer than 2,000 professional photographers within the United States have earned the CPP which involves passing a comprehensive written examination measuring technical expertise and successfully submitting photographic work to a panel of judges for review and approval.

The fee I charge for each commercial and editorial assignment is called Creative Fee with Reproduction License, which includes the actual location photography and granting of rights for the client’s intended use of the images. I’ve learned over several years of doing a wide variety of photo shoots for many different clients that there are many factors that are unique to each job including my cost of doing business, time spent with image editing and post-production, difficulty of the job, client wanting exclusive rights, how much work is involved before the actual photo shoot, prestige of doing the assignment, etc.

The only other possible expenses would be items such as travel, assistant, models, make-up artist, additional disks, digital editing, post-production and prints.

I also offer services and image usage rights in exchange for publicity and/or marketing purposes or donate services to select charity organizations and efforts, however, I am VERY selective as to what organizations and projects I donate these services and images to. My basic rule of thumb is if a non-profit organization has a payroll and is paying for services provided by an ad/creative agency, then there is no reason why they can’t pay for professional photography and images.

Unless otherwise negotiated during the job estimate process, I retain copyright ownership on all photographs taken for portrait packages and commercial assignments, with the option of publishing selected images for my own marketing, advertising and promotion purposes.

I utilize professional-grade Canon EOS 35mm digital camera bodies (1D Mark III and 5D Mark II) combined with Canon L-grade lenses, Alien Bee studio strobe lighting system, Pocket Wizard radio remotes, umbrellas, light boxes, full muslin and paper backgrounds. Jim’s digital darkroom consists of a Mac Pro Quad Xeon 64-bit workstation and Dell Precision 360 PC, both with multiple hard drive back-up systems and networked via Apple AirPort Extreme wireless, Apple 23-inch cinema LCD display, Samsung large format monitor and a 17″ MacBook Pro laptop using Adobe Bridge, Lightroom and Photoshop CS3 as well as Apple Aperture software.

All original, raw client image files client are archived on multiple drives and DVD disks.

A minimum $100 retainer is required for most portrait appointments and commercial assignments, particularly as it may apply to new clients. Service agreement may be required for commercial assignment photography projects. Photography by Jim Crotty accepts cash, check or PayPal.
